Wycombe vs Aston Villa – Match Preview

Midfielder Marcus Bean and striker Paul Hayes are available for Wycombe after recovering from ankle problems.

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram is suspended after being sent off against Morecambe last Saturday so coach Barry Richardson, 46, is on the bench.

Aston Villa are missing winger Adama Traore (broken foot), but striker Jordan Ayew and midfielder Ashley Westwood are back from suspensions.

Midfielder Carlos Sanchez and defender Alan Hutton (both hamstring) are out.

Editor’s Note: The biggest headline coming out of the pre match press regarding this game is the fact that Wycombe are having to field a 46 year old year old on the bench. Due to a shortage of numbers Barry Richardson will be keeping the bench warm and probably hoping he isn’t called into action himself.

That selection news has taken the focus off of Aston Villa as they hope that they aren’t added to the long list of F.A. Cup 3rd Round giant killings Tomorrow Lunchtime. After defeat at Sunderland last week Villa’s relegation fight has got even harder and although by no means mathmatically impossible it’s fair to say that they probably need to start preparing for life in The Championship next season.

The club haven’t won a league game since the opening day of the season and Remi Garde is still yet to taste victory since being appointed as Tim Sherwood’s replacement back in November. A win tomorrow would not only be a welcome distraction from their pitiful league form but it could be a platform to a resurgent season…well that might be asking too much.

Wycombe find themselves in the League Two Play Off Positions and with Aston Villa bereft of form and confidence right now there’s no reason why they can’t claim a Cup scalp against the Premier League’s basement side. Surely though Villa have to win this one otherwise people will start asking if Remi Garde was the right appointment after all.

Logic would point to the Premier League side winning this one but it wouldn’t be the biggest shock of the weekend if Wycombe get at least a replay from this. Villa should win but I wouldn’t touch this one from a betting point of view, if I did then I’d stick a quid on Wycombe to win.
