The China Cup may have bought much bemusement to UFWC fans around the world but the end result is the same as Chile continue their reign as holders. It’s fair to say that a large majority of followers were hoping that either China or Iceland would be successful in the competition to move the trophy out of the South American landlock which this trophy seems to be in.
Unfortunately though that was not the case as after disposing of the hosts in midweek, the UFWC holders Chile went onto beat Iceland 1-0 yesterday to do a China Cup and UFWC Championship double. The game which without either sides star players was one that was devoid of any real quality and was settled by just a solitary goal.
The game’s only goal coming as early as the 18th minute when an Angelo Sagal header put Chile ahead and that would turn out to be enough to ensure that Chile would be the first ever winners of this not so prestigious international tournament. Whether this is just a one off remains to be seen but you do wonder with it being in an awkward place in regards to the international calendar how much support it will continue to get.
For holders Chile the next defence gets a lot more serious as they go up against regular holders Argentina, will Messi and co be able to add another reign of this proverbial hot potato come March. That one obviously doubles up as an all important World Cup Qualifying match with Chile in 4th and Argentina a place further back in 5th. These places take extra significance as Chile currently hold the final automatic qualification spot. Chile will do well to leave Buenos Aries with still having a firm grip on the UFWC crown.
Here is all you need to know from yesterday
