Tottenham vs Newcastle – Match Preview

Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier is expected to be fit despite suffering a shin injury in the win over Monaco.

Fellow midfielder Mousa Dembele missed that match through illness and is doubtful for this weekend.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has no new injury worries and will have the same squad who beat Liverpool.

The Magpies are still without defender Jamaal Lascelles and midfielders Cheick Tiote and Rolando Aarons, but the trio could return to action next week.

Editor’s Note: Tottenham looked dominant on Thursday in their 4-1 win over Monaco in the Europa League but the league campaign has taken a slight stutter with the last two matches only returning draws. A leggy performance was turned out a fortnight ago against Chelsea due to their Azerbaijani jaunt and last weeks trip to West Brom will probably be considered two points dropped.

I don’t want this to sound like a case of entitlement when moaning about too many draws in an unbeaten run but I guess it’s just the measure of how far Spurs have progressed this season and the raised level of expectations that come with it

The North London side are now 14 Premier League games unbeaten a club record which they will look to further extend on Sunday when Newcastle visit White Hart Lane. There are a few injury worries for Mauricio Pochettino especially in the Centre of Midfield with Eric Dier hobbling off just before half time against Monaco but the substitution was deemed more of a precaution and the England International looks set to start Tomorrow.

Although they look set to be without Mousa Dembele through illness and that will be a big blow due to the way the Belgian has been transformed this season and arguably playing his best Football in a Spurs shirt. One a positive note Mauricio Pochettino was able to rest Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen on Thursday so at least they will be raring to go come Sunday.

They face a Newcastle side who are looking to continue their wave of resurgence after what must be considered an upset win over Liverpool last Sunday. That win at St James Park certainly eased the pressure on Steve McClaren and has no doubt kept him in a job for a while longer at least

Although The Magpies do still in the Bottom three and last week’s game against Liverpool was almost a must win considering Bournemouth and Sunderland are starting to get better with each week so Newcastle know their performances must improve or they will get cast adrift with Aston Villa.

Tomorrow Tottenham will go into the game as clear favourites and need a win themselves to make sure they can stay in the hunt for the Top 4 and not let the gap between them and Manchester United get any bigger. It may be Spurs bias here but I would expect them to win at home Tomorrow and heap more pressure on Steve McClaren, let’s just hope that is the case come 6pm on Sunday.
