- Another opportunity to break the top four
- Another opportunity spurned
- Southampton may extend their Premier League run without a win to 11 games but they will be at least boosted by their performance against Tottenham
- Then again you could argue it was maybe the fact that Mauricio Pochettino’s men were poor
- A side that was without Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen certainly missed the latter
- But you could make a case of at least five players who did not have a good game in a Tottenham shirt
- Davinson Sanchez, Moussa Sissoko, Serge Aurier, Heung min-Son and Dele Alli all had days to forget
- None more so than Sanchez who put through his own net after a quarter of an hour to give Southampton the lead
- The Saints got a lot of early joy down their left hand side and Ryan Bertrand’s cross found its way over the line much to the dismay of the traveling Spurs fans
- Although Southampton’s joy was short lived as Harry Kane made it 99 Premier League goals for Tottenham just a couple of minutes after
- Now with something like 73 minutes left to play you would have thought that Tottenham would kick on for the winner
- But it never came
- And truth be told you would have to say that they didn’t deserve to win either
- On the balance of play you would have to say a draw was just about the fair result but not the right one as far as Tottenham are concerned
- Southampton still find themselves in the bottom three but they will at least be boosted by that as it is a result that just eases the pressure on Mauricio Pellegrino
- A heavy defeat yesterday and with Marco Silva now available after being sacked by Watford it would have been very easy to put two and two together
- But the former Alaves boss will certainly live to fight another week and that will come against Watford in the F.A. Cup this weekend
- For Tottenham though there is every chance that they will be five points behind Liverpool in the race for fourth
- And they now have a huge trio of league games upcoming, one that is going to define their season
- Quite simply they are going to need three wins from three to reignite their Champions League hopes
- One that now look particularly slim
- It was just an off day for Tottenham, the final ball was poor and opportunities were slim
- You could blame the conditions but then again you would only be looking for excuses
- The midfield unit was poor today, Son failed to get going and was nowhere near the plaudit winning performance against Everton in their previous outing
- Kane will get some credit for his leveler but just when Tottenham needed him most he fluffed his lines
- In the last minute of normal time, they had a man over and with the final ball at the feet of Kane it was perfectly set for him to get his century of Premier League goals
- Only he fluffed his lines by shanking his effort wide
- A finish that just summed the day up
- Nothing short of frustrating
- A result that in fairness suits neither team in their respective hopes for the season but one that they will have to settle for
