Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to three points thanks to a comfortable win at home to Espanyol yesterday Afternoon. A win that would have been all the more pleasing as it not only saw Gareth Bale return from injury but also get on the scoresheet.
With Real playing before both of their nearest rivals Barcelona and Sevilla this weekend it was the perfect opportunity to add more pressure on the teams chasing Los Blancos and it was to be an opportunity they did not pas up.
Zinedine Zidane’s men were in control throughout and took a deserved lead when Alvaro Morata opened the scoring on 33 minutes. The Spanish international who is reportedly a target for Antonio Conte’s Chelsea in the Summer was on hand to head Real in front after converting a cross from Isco.
Many feared the worst when Gareth Bale was ruled out with an injury in November but it’s as if Real have not missed a step during his enforced spell of absence. They may have lost that stunning unbeaten record but they have pulled clear at the top of the table not to mention becoming FIFA World Club Champions.
And the Welsh star would come on for goalscorer Morata on 71 minutes to a rapturous applause. Those cheers would get even louder just 12 minutes later when the former Tottenham man made sure of all three points as he doubled Real’s advantage.
The Wales forward collected Isco’s pass before running at the visitors’ defence and slotting a shot past Diego Lopez. It was almost as if he never went away, Madrid have looked pretty special over the past few months and now with Bale back they look even stronger. The rest of La Liga and Europe is on notice.
Here is all you need to know from yesterday.
