Real Betis vs Sevilla in less than 3 minutes

Sevilla find themselves joint top of La Liga after a hard fought win over Real Betis in yesterday’s Seville derby. Wednesday night saw Sevilla come out on top in their Champions League tie with Leicester but that 2-1 scoreline leaves the tie firmly in the balance.

It was the same scoreline yesterday but there is nothing in the balance about this one as Jorge Sampaoli’s side once again leapfrog Barcelona and now join Real Madrid at the head of the table. Real Madrid may have two games in hand but this Sevilla side are certainly not slipping away from what is very much a 3 horse race for the title.

They came out winners yesterday but they had to do it the hard way after Real Betis took the lead on 36 minutes. Betis left-back Riza Durmisi opened the scoring with a first-half free-kick and that would see the home side go into the break ahead of their local rivals.

But the game would be turned around for Sevilla with two second half goals to give them local bragging rights. Argentine defender Gabriel Mercado leveled from close range on 56 minutes while Sevilla’s winner had a contentious element to it.

Vicente Iborra stabbed home the winner with 14 minutes to play after Steven N’Zonzi flicked on Samir Nasri’s free-kick from what appeared to be an offside position. Luckily for Sevilla the Assistant Referee’s flag stayed down and that meant local bragging rights will go to the away side.

Real Madrid and Sevilla now find themselves on 52 points while Barcelona are a point further back on 51. That could all change today though with both Real and Barcelona in La Liga action but for now Sevilla will be sitting very pretty in second and very much a part of this quest for the title.
