Manchester United Complete Martinez Signing
Manchester United have completed the signing of Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax in an arrangement worth up to 67m euros (£57m).
Erik ten Hag was keen to be brought reuinted with the 24-year-old, who he first signed for Ajax in 2019.
He joins the club on a five-year contract which keeps him at Old Trafford until 2027, with the option of a further year.
After moving from Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia for £6.3m in 2019, Martinez would make 120 appearances for his now previous club.
He has won seven international caps for Argentina since making his senior presentation in March 2019, and played once in the country’s successful Copa America crusade of 2021.
Martinez played under Ten Hag at Ajax and brought home the Eredivisie championship with the club in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Dutch Cup in 2021.
He was likewise Ajax’s player of the year for the 2021-22 season.
“He’s a fighter and I figure the fans will respect him. He has a mentality, battling soul,” Ten Hag said.
“He brings aggressive in the game, positively. I think we want that.
“But at the same time he’s skilful, he can manage the ball and he’s left-footed.”
Joined’s football chief John Murtough added: “We are really glad that he has decided to join Manchester United and we are anticipating seeing him grow further and assist the group with the success that they are hoping for”
The centre back is United’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Christian Eriksen and Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia.
While the club endeavors in their bid to bring Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford from Barcelona.
