Joleon Lescott Sees The Stadium Of Light

Another day further in to the January transfer window and another signing has been completed with the news that Joleon Lescott has signed for Sunderland on a free transfer. The 34 year old was available after a stint at Greek side AEK Athens was ended by mutual consent earlier in the season.

Sunderland fans will no doubt be glad that a new face has arrived at the club, with so many injuries and absences because of the AFCON as of late. The mixture of injuries and unavailability has meant that David Moyes has been working with a threadbare side and it has shown with their recent run of results.

With Lescott being part of the Aston Villa side that were relegated last season he may not be the best omen to come to Wearside but with the financial situation that Sunderland are in, beggers can certainly not afford to be choosers right now when it comes to Sunderland transfer targets.

Lescott joins on a deal until the end of the season with the sole brief being keeping the club in the Premier League and the former Aston Villa arrives in Sunderland with The Black Cats currently sitting at the foot of the table after 22 matches.

As bad as that sounds, a bid for safety is still within their grasp as they are only 3 points from safety. But the question you have to ask is where will those three points come from. David Moyes has not seen his side win any of their last 5 league outings.

The only point they have picked up in that run of matches was a creditable draw at home to Liverpool but that has been the only bright light in a gloomy spell of results since the turn of year. With the arrival of Lescott at the club the hope is that they can find those much needed points to get out of the drop zone.

With Sunderland dumped out of the F.A. Cup by Burnley after a third round replay, Lescott will have to wait until January 31st to make his club debut when Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham come to town, so Lescott is set to have a baptism of fire as the North London club will look to return to winning ways after their draw with Manchester City last Saturday.
