From The Bootroom To The Boardroom

The career of a Footballer is a fruitful but short one and if a player hasn’t spent his/her money wisely during it, they could be left strapped for cash in their later years once the days of the bootroom have long been left behind.

A prime example of this was the legendary George Best who once said, “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.” This typified a Footballers mentality back in the day.

Today however, it seems as though players have learnt from their predecessors’ mistakes and are spending their mega-bucks on businesses and other ventures to make sure they can live comfortably once they retire.

With image rights just as important as results on the pitch, Football continues to be incredibly big business as global sponsors look to attach themselves with the biggest names in the beautiful game.

Earnings took an almost stratospheric leap in the late 1990’s after the introduction of the Bosman Ruling which put the power very much in the players hands when it came to transfers and more importantly wages.

Now players can command a six figure salary with relative ease and that is just in the Premier League, let us not forget the almost eye watering sums that the club owners in China were prepared to pay for the likes of Carlos Tevez earlier in the year.

Can you blame players for perhaps sacrificing their careers to play in an inferior league when there is so much money at stake. We all have our principles but I guess that decision is somewhat of a no brainer

As a result, the guys at Clubline Football, have been kind enough to take a look at which Footballers of the modern era have spent the most wisely since retiring and how their various business ventures have done.

So, take a look!
