In Group A, France are now just one win away from reaching next Summer’s World Cup Finals after victory against Bulgaria last night. Didier Deschamps men traveled to Sofia last night and needed just a solitary goal in which to earn the win.
The goal came from PSG midfielder Blaise Matiudi after just three minutes and although France would not be troubled the win came at a cost. That being injury to N’Golo Kante, it will be frustration for Didier Deschamps as Kante will not feature on Tuesday.
But it will be greater disappointment for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte who now has both Kante and Alvaro Morata on the treatment table with the former Italy manager now sweating on the fitness of Kante before the champions make the short trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Sweden boosted their chances of securing at least a play-off spot in the best possible way after recording a cricket score against Luxembourg last night. Luxembourg held France to a very surprising draw last month but it was a different story in Solna as they shipped eight goals.
Marcus Berg scored four of them as the Swede’s now find themselves not only three points clear of the Netherlands but now with a much stronger goal difference. The two nations face off on Tuesday night but it is going to require a 12 goal swing for Dick Advocaat’s men.
Simply put they are going to have to beat Sweden by a scoreline of 7-0 to have a chance of even securing a play-off spot. Last night the Dutch needed a hatful of goals of their own and although they got three in a win over Belarus in Minsk it was a scoreline that flattered them.
They laboured to a 3-1 win after two late goals including a penalty from Arjen Robben to restore their lead. That said Belarus should have made it 2-2 in the final minutes after hitting the woodwork and flashing a header past the post with Dutch hearts in mind.
