What have we learned after two rounds of Euro 2016 group matches?

euro 2016

We’re now two thirds of the way through the group stages of Euro 2016, so it’s time for a quickfire team by team review as we head into the all important final group games

France – Like leaving it late, are they doing good enough to be champions? Maybe a performance against Switzerland will give us more of an idea

Switzerland – Second in the group but if it wasn’t for being wasteful against Romania they could have also booked their place in the knockouts.

Romania – Up against Albania they will very much fancy their chances but they could do with finding the net from open play, they can’t keep relying on Bogdan Stancu spot kicks

Albania – Unprepared in the first game, unlucky in the second game, They haven’t disgraced themselves at their major tournament debut but still need to find their feet at this level

England – Despair against Russia, delight against Wales. Has Hodgson finally stumbled on his best eleven, does the tournament start properly tomorrow night?

Slovakia – Beat Russia but almost made hard work of that towards the end, the will cause England trouble but with the wave of optimism in the England camp it shouldn’t be too much concern

Wales – Not quite a one man team but they naturally have relied on Gareth Bale, they will need him to be at his best if they are to get out of the group stages

Russia – Slow, aged but somehow still in with a chance of getting out of the group. Although I think that says more about the tournament structure than the talent that Russia have at their disposal

Germany – Certainly not playing like a team that was World Champions two years ago. They haven’t looked bad but they haven’t looked great. Then again never write off the Germans

Poland – Robert Lewandowski has been kept quiet but still they find themselves joint top of the group, if it wasn’t for better finishing they could be top outright.

Northern Ireland – They may not be on fire but they are certainly heating up. The final group game against Germany is massive can they stun the World Champions en route to the Round of 16

Ukraine – Disappointing by even their own relatively low standards, the first team to be knocked out of the tournament which says it all really

Spain – After taking a long time to break down the Czech Republic they had no such concerns against Turkey, they are now finding their feet. Europe be warned

Croatia – We should be talking about a side on 6 points and looking one of the tournament favourites. Instead we’re talking about 4 points and the bizarre scenes against the Czech Republic

Czech Republic – So close to keeping Spain at bay but kept themselves in the tournament with a dogged comeback against Croatia. The knockout stages are a real possibility now

Turkey – Very unimpressive so much so even their own fans have turned on them. Arda Turan can’t wait to go home, don’t worry Arda it won’t be long

Italy – Very impressive in their win over Belgium, very boring in their win over Sweden. But they aren’t here to entertain they are here to win. One of a few sides setting the early pace

Belgium – Come in for some criticism after defeat to Italy but made the critics eat their words with a demolition of the Republic Of Ireland, if they can play more like the latter then they will be dangerous opposition

Sweden – Zlatan Ibrahimovic hasn’t scored and therefore Sweden aren’t performing. Too much reliance on their talisman is looking like it will prove costly

Republic Of Ireland – Should have taken their chances against Sweden, didn’t get a chance against Belgium. They really have it all to do now in their final game

Hungary – Absolutely no-one outside of Hungary or even many people in it would have had them top of the group at this stage they are very close to surprising a lot of people

Iceland – Gained an historic first point against Portugal and were so close to a historic first win against Hungary. That win will have come against Austria if they are to make the knockout stages

Portugal – It certainly hasn’t been Cristiano Ronaldo’s tournament as he has yet to find the net after his comments after the Iceland game he won’t get much sympathy outside of Portugal for his current plight

Austria – Shocked by Hungary but dogged in their resistance of Portugal. They really need David Alaba to pull something out of the bag against Iceland if they are to make it to the Round of 16.
