Costa Rica may have got the better of this 5 goal thriller but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to see them advance to the Copa America Centenario Quarter Finals. That’s because their CONCACAF rivals USA picked a win over Paraguay in the remaining group fixture
It was the perfect start for Costa Rica as Johan Venegas put them infront after just 2 minutes but they were pegged back just 5 minutes later through Frank Fabra. Fabra would then be on the scoresheet again but this time at the wrong end as his own goal gave Costa Rica a 2-1 lead going into the break
And the advantage would be increased just before the hour as Celso Borges made it 3-1 and all but wrapped up the win, Marlos Moreno pulled back a goal with 15 minutes to go to give Colombia hope but it wouldn’t be enough as Costa Rica held out for somewhat of an upset win
That jubilation would turn into disappointment once news of the USA’s result had filtered through and it meant that Costa Rica would be going home
For Colombia they will now face Brazil in the Quarter Finals
