Romania vs Switzerland a few quick thoughts

  • It was honours even in this Group A encounter between Switzerlanda and Romania
  • A result that still leaves qualification to the Round of 16 in the balance for both sides
  • A win would have meant that Switzerland would have been the first side to qualify for the knockouts but it was an opportunity missed for Vladimir Petkovic’s side
  • It was one way traffic early with Switzerland in firm control but they failed to take their chances
  • Haris Seferovic missed two clear cut efforts and they were to be punished soon after
  • Stephan Lichsteiner grabbed more then a handful of Alexandru Chipciu’s shirt inside the box and the Referee was on hand to award a penalty
  • There have only been two penalties in the tournament so far and both have gone to Romania and both have been coolly slotted home by Bogdan Stancu
  • Stancu very much (sorry)
  • Romania who can consider themselves unlucky not to have got a point from their opening encounter against France were then left questioning their luck again after hitting the woodwork
  • Cristian Sapunaru swivelled to shoot against the post when a free-kick dropped at his feet.
  • A let off for Switzerland
  • But for all the Swiss’ early pressure they would finally themselves back in the game in emphatic fashion
  • 12 minutes after the restart a corner was only cleared as far as Admir Mehmedi
  • He then proceeded to rifle a volley straight into the Romanian net to restore parity and make it 1-1
  • Switzerland then threw on youngster Breel Embolo in a bid to get a winner but the move didn’t pay off
  • That’s twice Switzerland have employed Embolo from the bench, will he be tasked with a start against France in their final group game
  • Romania held out the waves of late Swiss pressure to get off the mark in Euro 2016.
  • Second place is still very much for grabs in Group A
  • If Romania beat Albania and France beat Switzerland then it will be Anghel Iordanescu’s side who finish in the top two while the Swiss will have to hope they are one of the four best 3rd place teams
  • Still all to play for. I have a large interest in this as I’m going to see the Runners up of Group A take on the Runners up of Group C next Saturday.
  • My money is on Switzerland
