Match Of The Day a few quick and very late thoughts

  • Manchester City came away from Vicarage Road with all 3 points, it looked like another miserable trip on the road for City but two goals in the last 10 minutes managed to turn the game around. Those turnarounds can make all the difference come the end of the season. That win won’t win them league but it will surely go some way to helping
  • As for Watford they once again were unlucky to lose a game at home for the second time in less than a week. Sanchez Quique Flores has got a well drilled team at Vicarage Road, if they keep this level of performance up they’ll be a Top 10 team this season for sure.
  • Sunderland did their survival hopes some good as they beat a woeful Aston Villa side on Saturday. A 6 pointer which The Black Cats got the better off, Jermaine Defoe again had a good day out against Villa with him bagging a brace, as for Villa the manner in which they conceded the 3rd pretty much summed up their season.
  • Will Remi Garde even last the season, still looking for that first win since taking over. Did Randy Lerner make the wrong appointment when sacking Tim Sherwood, it might be looking like that
  • Arsenal went clear at the top with a win over Leicester but Newcastle will be wondering how they didn’t at least get a point from their trip to The Emirates. I think the answer to that is Alexsandar Mitrovic. If he could find the net more regularly then they would be further away from the drop zone. 3 defeats in a row for Newcastle but so many wasted chances by Mitrovic have been the reason. As for Arsenal not pretty but when you’re top that’s how you stay top by winning games like this
  • Manchester United kick started 2016 with a win and easing the pressure on Louis Van Gaal. Wayne Rooney managed to get on the scoresheet so a rare happy afternoon at Old Trafford, although they were made to work for it by Swansea and if it wasn’t for Fabianski’s late header going the wrong side of the post it would have been more discontent for The Red Devils. As for Swansea they saw their 3 game unbeaten run but will these performances as of late be enough for Alan Curtis to get the job full time.
  • West Ham moved up to 7th place and continued their unbeaten run to 7 matches albeit 5 of those are draws. Antonio and Carroll getting the goals for the second game in a row, with Antonio knowing more about this one than last weeks effort. As for Liverpool their indifferent season continues, a day to forget for Jurgen Klopp’s men, now with the transfer window open will he take the opportunity to get some of his own players in which to work with
  • West Brom managed to nick all 3 points against Stoke and move up to the heady heights of 12th. It was a late winner but the turning point off the game was Geoff Cameron’s incorrect sending off, that said it was a sloppy goal for Stoke to concede which enabled Johnny Evans to snatch all 3 points late on. A rare quiet day for players of the calibre of Shaqiri and Arnautovic. Stoke still stay 10th though
  • Norwich win their second game in a row and are now up to 15th in the table. Their win at home to Southampton was no doubt aided by Victor Wanyama’s sending off but they still had to take advantage of their numerical superiority and that’s exactly what they did. As for Southampton their slide down the table continues and Ronald Koeman seems to be getting more and more animated in the post match press conferences
  • Finally Leicester and Bournemouth. Leicester 3rd game in a row without a goal, only they had the perfect opportunity to win it were it not for Riyad Mahrez’s poor penalty. That said I think Bourenmouth were hard done by as it was never a sending off which led to the spot kick. Therefore a point was probably a fair result and one in which Eddie Howe would be happier with, although Claudio Ranieri also had cause for celebration as The Foxes reached the magical 40 point marker. The question now will be how much will this miss Jamie Vardy over the next fortnight as he is absent through injury.
