Match of The Day a few quick thoughts

  • Leicester’s party was in full flow as the new Premier League champions were presented with the trophy at The King Power Stadium last night
  • That came after a convincing 3-1 win over Everton as Claudio Ranieri’s side showed the kind of performance that led them to the title
  • Jamie Vardy bagged a brace but spurned the opportunity to not only collect the match ball but also to go level with Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. His second spot kick of the day was launched high over the cross bar and it sees him one behind Kane’s 25 goal tally with Kane still to play today
  • As for Everton, another poor performance away from home and it seems as if all their efforts from last Saturday’s win have been undone. Defeat for Roberto Martinez’s side and in that manner especially sees him edge closer to the Everton exit door
  • With the title race run to completion the focus now shifts to the battle to stay up and the momentum changes from week to week and this time it’s very much advantage Sunderland
  • They picked a massive win at home to former champions Chelsea. A win that could see them secure safety in midweek if they beat Everton at home and with the way Everton are playing on the road as of late then I’d say it’s very much in Sunderland’s hands
  • They came from 2-1 down and thanks to goals from Fabio Borini and Jermain Defoe they secured all 3 points and a result that is a massive boost for them while being a crushing blow for Newcastle and Norwich
  • As for Chelsea, they reverted to type after their performance on Monday and spare a thought for John Terry who has more than likely ended his Chelsea career with the ignominy of being shown a Red Card at The Stadium of Light
  • Sunderland’s North East rivals Newcastle missed a relative open goal yesterday with the failure to beat Aston Villa yesterday. On that performance they deserve to go down, the way they played against the basement side signifies that they nearly are
  • Also nearly down are Norwich. Again it was a defensive lapse that proved to be their undoing.
  • Sebastien Bassong misreading the flight of the ball and allowing Wayne Rooney the time to craft a chance for Juan Mata to get the goals only game
  • United weren’t anything special but if results go their way they could be sitting 4th by the middle of next week. I wouldn’t rule them out of a Champions League place just yet
  • West Ham have blown their slim chance of a Top 4 finish after a woeful display at home to Swansea
  • It’s a second straight win for Swansea and they are now up to 11th in the table, many felt they had downed tools after defeat to Leicester but credit to Francesco Guidolin he has picked his side up again. Although whether he is there next season remains to be seen
  • Crystal Palace book ended their terrible run of form in 2016 by beating Stoke to get only their 2nd league win since December 19th. Who did they beat that day? Yes that’s right Stoke
  • Dwight Gayle at the double to get the result that finally kills off any lingering doubt that Palace could still go down
  • As for Bournemouth vs West Brom, about as a nothing as you can get. Artur Boruc adds another howler to his collection, surely he’ll be off in the Summer.
