Liverpool vs Tottenham a few quick thoughts

  • An arguably frustrating trip to Anfield for Tottenham Yesterday in what they will feel is two points dropped and a massive blow in terms of trying to close the gap on Premier League leaders Leicester
  • A win for Leicester against Southampton Today would see them go 7 points clear with 6 games to go and all but assure them a first ever title.
  • A draw was arguably the fair result with both Goalkeepers well worked and called upon to make a catalogue of important saves
  • Hugo Lloris was probably the busier of the two and his saves kept the scores level at Half Time
  • Tottenham did have opportunities of their own though with Harry Kane guilty of not making the most of the chances which were on offer
  • He looked a little lethargic in the first half, if he was a bit more lively then on another day he would have found the net with at least one of those
  • It was first blood to Liverpool though with Philippe Coutinho coolly slotting home after a well worked move around the edge of Tottenham’s area
  • Coutinho was definitely the engine room for Liverpool Yesterday and everything that was good come from the Brazilian. He certainly made the team tick
  • The question then was how if at all were Spurs going to get back into the game – the answer of course was Harry Kane
  • Once again the diagonal ball which has seen so much joy this season for Spurs was utilised
  • Toby Alderweireld launching another missile of a pass which looked like it was going out of play but a huge amount of credit must go to Christian Eriksen for not giving up and managing to keep the ball in play
  • His chasing of the ball and subsequent pass found Harry Kane with his back to goal. It seemingly looked like not much of a threat
  • But with Kane in the form he is in, you would have been silly to bet against him even after wasting his chances in the first half
  • An excellent turn and shot was nestled in the bottom of Simon Mignolet’s Goal to give Spurs a deserved equaliser
  • Spurs back in the game and not preparing to lay down in this title race just yet
  • Both sides then when in search of a winner and the pace of the game was end to end, Coutinho having probably the best chance to snatch a winner but after having Hugo Lloris rooted to the spot he put his shot the wrong side of the post
  • Mousa Dembele had a low shot late in injury time from outside the edge of the box but there wasn’t to be any late drama at Anfield as Mignolet was equal to the effort and managed to push the shot away to safety
  • The full time whistle blew and you could see the visible frustration from Mauricio Pochettino as he punched the ground
  • Anfield is never an easy place to go to for Spurs and before the game you felt a draw would probably be the outcome but in terms of the title race it gives a massive advantage to Leicester
  • Is this the game where the title hopes really slip away, also with Arsenal back in their stride even 2nd place may be too much for us
  • For Liverpool the attention now moves to Jurgen Klopp returning to Dortmnund in the Europa League on Thursday
  • No doom and gloom more an air of resignation that it’s going to be Leicester’s this season
  • We’ve been very good but Leicester have been simply excellent
  • But let’s stop talking Leicester the focus for Mauricio Pochettino now shifts to Manchester United next week but there is also the prospect that we could be 10 points behind at kick off
  • It’s going to take one hell of a swing to snatch the title now but until it’s impossible then we’re still in with a shout
  • Onto next week we go
