Borussia Dortmund vs Liverpool a few quick thoughts

  • It wasn’t quite the perfect homecoming for Jurgen Klopp last night but it’s very much advantage Liverpool in this Europa League Quarter Final matchup
  • With Klopp’s obvious knowledge of his opposition he was the perfect man to create a gameplan to stifle Dortmund and in most cases he did exactly that
  • But not only did the stifle Dortmund they sprung a real surprise when Divock Origi low shot was fired past Roman Wiedenfeller and into the net to give the 3,000 travelling Liverpool fans something to really shout about
  • Man of the moment Origi then had a chance to double Liverpool’s advantage but this time around Wiedenfeller was more than equal to it
  • Liverpool went into the break ahead at half time and would have looked to at least protect that lead
  • But whatever Thomas Tuchel said in his half time team talk obviously worked as just 3 minutes after the restart Mats Hummels levelled the score with a close range header
  • You then felt that the ascendancy was with Dortmund and they looked the favourites to go on and bag a winner
  • But Liverpool were resolute enough and held on to take a vital away goal back to Anfield next Thursday
  • One thing that may prove costly for club and player is the injury to Jordan Henderson, Klopp and Roy Hodgson will be sweating on the outcome and as to how long he will be absent for
  • Mamadou Sahko had a rare impressive game, he marshalled the backline and the only blip for the Defensive unit as a whole would have been allowing Hummels to score so soon after the break
  • That said they managed to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quiet, he was hauled after 77 minutes after a fruitless night in front of goal
  • The tie is neatly poised for next Thursday’s 2nd leg, if Liverpool can keep a clean sheet that will be enough to see them through to the Semi Finals. They are going to have their work cut out but it could be another of those magical European nights at Anfield.
