Younes Kaboul set to be a Black Cat

Younes Kaboul is set for a medical at Sunderland imminently.

The Black Cats have moved for the Tottenham centre-back after pulling out of a deal to sign Belgian defender Nicolas Lombaerts from Zenit St Petersburg.

Sunderland have agreed terms with Kaboul and he is expected on Wearside to complete a switch within the next 24 hours. No confirmation has yet been given on a fee.

The move from Spurs to Sunderland marks a stark reversal of fortune for 29-year-old Kaboul who was named White Hart Lane captain by Mauricio Pochettino last year.

He made just 15 appearances last season after falling out of favour with Pochettino and is now longer wanted and Spurs have been open to offers for some time.

He will be replaced by Toby Alderweireld who has arrived from Atletico Madrid to partner Jan Vertonghen. Kevin Wimmer has also been signed from Cologne to give Tottenham depth while Vlad Chiriches will also be moved on.

Editor’s Note: A pretty obvious transfer out of the club now that we have so money options at Centre Back. Also if reports are led to be believed since our initial transfer outlay this Summer we now have to raise funds to bring any more players. Therefore with the departure of Kaboul and also hopefully Benjamin Stambouli (to maybe even PSG – what on earth is all that about, do they see something we don’t?) then this will free up some funds to allow us to concentrate in adding some personnel to the forward positions at White Hart Lane.

For someone who was made club captain 12 months ago it’s been quite the downward trajectory for Kaboul at Tottenham, he’ll now be looking to bounce back and restart his career at Sunderland. If Sunderland can keep him injury free then there could be  a pretty decent signing, but then again keeping Kaboul injury free is easier said than done.
