Xhaka can be the key to Arsenal’s Midfield

Arsenal have announced their first signing of the Summer and they aren’t holding back in terms of spending money as earlier Today they announced the signing of Switzerland International Granit Xhaka. (I’m going to get my joke in early and say it’s a shame it wasn’t Liverpool as then we could have had the Midfiled of Xhaka Can – a missed opportunity there I’m sure you will agree)

Arsene Wenger has parted with £35m to capture the signing of Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach and Xhaka will be a key addition to a slightly lighter Midfield department. That is due to the departures of Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky, the trio weren’t offered new contracts by Arsene Wenger as the Frenchman looks to revitalise his squad after missing out on the Premier League title this season

With three Midfielders leaving you would imagine that Xhaka may not be the only player of that position entering the club over the Summer but for now you would imagine he would slot straight into the team and offer a new dimension to the Arsenal side.

With Jack Wilshere out pretty much all season Arsenal lost any real creative spark in the central areas behind Mesut Ozil. They were often accused of a weakness in the spine of the team and Xhaka’s purchase will go someway to rectifying that problem.

You would imagine he will be paired up with Mohamed Elneny in the centre, the Egyptian Elneny was purchased in January from Basle and looked better and better as the season went on. With a full pre-season under his belt a partnership of Elneny and Xhaka could be very interesting for Arsenal

This would probably see Francis Coquelin drop down to the bench, last season he had  a campaign disrupted by injuries and suspension and it seems as if he will lose his first eleven berth in the Arsenal side

Wenger is often accused of not spending money when it’s required but this will go someway to appeasing the rather vocal fanbase but you feel that they can’t make the same mistake of last Summer when they only purchased one player and not even an outfield one to boot.

With the injury to Danny Welbeck who is out for 9 months, the question is whether Oliver Giroud is the man to spearhead another tilt at the title. He’s a man who splits opinion but if Arsenal are to finally make that final step to the top of the table come next May then they need to find a Striker who can deliver 20+ goals a season as looking back that was probably the difference between them finishing 2nd and 1st this season.
