Will Walker Sprint Out Of White Hart Lane This Summer?

With Tottenham winning the nation’s hearts at present due to their excellent displays of free flowing football, it comes as no real surprise that a number of their stars are on the radars of some of Europe’s biggest club and the one name that is creating the most conversation right now is Kyle Walker.

Eyebrows were raised when Walker was left out of the starting eleven for Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea in the F.A. Cup Semi Final and those eyebrows would have got even higher by the time Sunday afternoon came around as Walker once again had to make do with a place on the bench.

But has the decision to leave the England international out of two key games in the space of eight days created our first transfer saga of the Summer. Clubs both domestically and on the continent will be monitoring the situation with keen interest.

It has been reported that Manchester City and Manchester United are preparing a move for Walker while Barcelona are also keen admirers of the 26 year old who started his career at Sheffield United. Should a bid be prepared we could be looking at a bid starting in the region of £35m

But with Walker earning just £70,000 a week there is every opportunity that he could double his money should a move away from White Hart Lane be facilitated in the close season, therefore it comes as no surprise that his head could well have been turned due to his lack of game time as of late.

You must remember that Walker has predominately been the first choice Right Back this season but he will certainly be irked that he has missed two defining games in Tottenham’s season with Kieran Trippier getting the nod on both occasions.

It has been documented that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino thinks that Kyle Walker cannot play twice in a week, a claim which the player does deny but if that is to be the theory for the former Espanyol and Southampton boss then the decision to rest Walker again does have some credence.

Walker played against Crystal Palace in the clubs 1-0 win but it must be said he did not have a particularly good game and with the games coming thick and fast it was probably deemed that Trippier would be the fresher and better prepared for the Arsenal game.

With Tottenham beating their North London rivals it was a decision that was justified but the key now will be try and placate the player and try to dampen down any threat of Walker departing in the close season. But at the same time you could ask the question is the player expendable.

If Tottenham were to lose any of their star players which obviously they would be loathed to do so then you could argue that Walker is the one star that should they lose they would not feel so much of a detriment to the starting eleven.

There is little to choose between Walker and Trippier, both have different key attributes. Walker is better going forward while Trippier delivers the better ball from wide. So arguably it would depend what you would consider more vital in a right back/right wing back position.

But if the club were to lose the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen or Toby Alderweireld then you would have to wonder just how easily they could replace those players and also to what detriment would there be to their starting eleven.

So Walker may well be deemed an expendable asset and if Daniel Levy was to once again be a master negotiator then there is no reason that the fee commanded could be nearer £50. Funds that could be recycled into adding depth to what is a slightly thin squad compared to their title rivals.

Walker has been at Tottenham for 7 years and arguably could play for at least the same length of time has a world class defender. Whether he feels he fancies a new challenge or he wants to stay around for Tottenham to move in to their new stadium is ultimately a decision he will have to make.
