West Ham vs Huddersfield a few quick thoughts

  • There will be undoubted relief for Slaven Bilic as he celebrated his birthday in ideal fashion
  • After the sacking of Frank De Boer yesterday it is fair to say that the former Croatian international would have been feeling the pressure going into last night’s encounter with Huddersfield
  • That is because De Boer was sacked after losing his first four matches and with West Ham losing their first three, people were making the obvious connection if the Hammers were in the same situation by the end of the evening
  • Thankfully thought that was not the case as the East London outfit finally got off the mark for the season
  • Perhaps it comes as no small coincidence that West Ham’s first win came with their first outing at the London Stadium
  • The first half saw the home side pressurise David Wagner’s Huddersfield side but without a breakthrough
  • Andy Carroll was given his first start of the season and always the key will be as to whether or not he can stay fit for a prolonged run of fixtures
  • If he can then he will undoubtedly be a massive asset to this club but there is always a question mark hanging over his head when it comes to his fitness
  • Javier Hernandez who before the end of this game was the only person to find the net for West Ham this season hit the bar in what was a largely frustrating night for the Mexican international
  • The former Manchester United man was hauled off half way through the second half with Andre Ayew coming on as his replacement
  • It did however look as if Huddersfield would be able to withstand that pressure and go on to earn their fourth consecutive clean sheet of the season
  • It was going to take a huge slice of luck to break the deadlock and that is exactly what happened
  • Pedro Obiang attempted to curl an effort into the top left hand corner of the goal, only to see it take a massive deflection off of Mathias Jorgensen’s back
  • With Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl now wrong footed the ball sailed over his head and gave West Ham a deserved albeit highly fortunate lead
  • And that goal seemed to knock the wind out of the Yorkshire outfit and five minutes later they would be two done
  • Substitute Andre Ayew prodded home from close range to all but wrap up the Hammers’ first three points of the season
  • Tom Ince did hit the bar late on as Huddersfield tried to find a late foothold but they were not going to break down a West Ham side that earned their first clean sheet of the season
  • Disappointment for Huddersfield as their unbeaten run comes to an end
  • You could argue that had Obiang not got that massive slice of luck then it could very well have ended in a stalemate
  • But perhaps that was the moment that could ignite West Ham’s season
  • They now find themselves in 18th, so still some work to do in that aspect
  • While Huddersfield stay in the heady heights of 6th
