Wenger Planning Targets With No Solid Foundation

The Arsene Wenger chronicles have taken another twist today with the reported news that the current Arsenaal manager is eyeing up a list of transfer targets for next season. But he is doing so without confirming his status at the club for the next season.

Does this point to Wenger being given a new contract or is the 67 year old just pretending to look busy in the final few weeks of managing Arsenal. If you were an office worker it would be the equivalent of half heartedly working on a spreadsheet while working your notice period.

Another question it raises is what player would move to Arsenal not knowing who the manager will be next season. With the uncertainty looming still large it almost makes the collation of a list of transfer targets almost irrelevant as no top player in their right mind would be interested in a move without knowing who will be in charge.

Perhaps and most probably the decision will be made as to whether Wenger is staying before the transfer window opens. In doing so and should Wenger decide to step aside then it would give the new incumbent plenty of time to come in and shop for transfer targets of his own.

With this news and the fact that Arsenal have reached the F.A. Cup Final it does seem to symbolise that Wenger’s position at the club is certainly stronger then what it was a couple of weeks ago. Some felt that the perfect time to announce a new contract for the former Monaco boss would have been after their win over Manchester City on Sunday.

But for whatever reasons that announcement has not been forthcoming, so we continue to play the waiting game as to when we will find out whether or not Arsene Wenger will still be in charge of the North London club going into next season.

And the longer the uncertainty continues the more apprehension there will be for Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to commit their own long term futures. Their contract talks still continue in the background and just like any incoming targets they will want to know who is in charge next season before putting pen to paper.

He also has stated that Oliver Giroud will be staying at the club after supposed interest from Marseille. Giroud himself has only signed a new contract at the start of the year and Wenger has gone on record by saying that he is not for sale.#

So that is one player staying put but critics of the club have stated that they could well do with an overhaul in the Summer. The likes of Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott are just a couple of players who have perhaps been showed too much loyalty by Wenger in the past.

Will Wenger wield in the axe in the Summer and freshen up the playing personnel at The Emirates. Ultimately who goes and who stays is all conjecture until the man at the top of the hierarchy announces his intentions, until then Arsenal cannot lay down any foundations just yet.
