Watford vs Manchester City – Premier League Match Preview

Life under Marco Silva at Watford could not be better as the club are yet to beaten in their first four matches of the season, that however is a run of results that is going to be put under serious pressure this afternoon as his side play host to a Manchester City who themselves are yet to have tasted defeat.

Watford have picked 8 points from a possible 12 and that points tally sees them currently lie fourth in the table just two points behind joint leaders City, a win for the home side would actually see them go top of the table what with both City’s crosstown rivals Manchester United and Chelsea playing on Sunday.

The fact that Watford find themselves in the Champions League places at presesnt will have fans dreaming ‘what if we can sustain this form?’ but the more realistic fan will just be hoping that it is not a case of their being another post Christmas slump.

That happened in their first two seasons since their return to the top flight and it is ultimately what cost both Quique Sanchez Flores and Walter Mazzarri their jobs at Vicarage Road, it may be early in this particular campaign but the appointment of the former Hull City boss is looking very astute indeed.

But the club will not be allowed to rest on their laurels after such an impressive start to the campaign as they play host to a City side that won here on the final day of last season by five goals to nil. It would be fair to say though that perhaps the Watford players were already on the beach what with their top flight status already secured for another season.

They will certainly not be able to down tools this afternoon especially as they go up agains a side that has scored nine goals in the past week. In addition to their 5-0 thumping of Liverpool last week, Manchester City then got their Champions League exploits off to a perfect start with a 4-0 win in Rotterdam against Feyenoord.

The victory at The Etihad saw them dismantle Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side and although much has been made about Sadio Mane’s sending off even with eleven men versus eleven you could fail to see past Pep Guardiola’s men coming out on top that lunchtime. The scoreline may have finally been registered as five goals but it could have been seven or eight in all fairness.

Gabriel Jesus had his usual goal for offside chalked off but the partnership between himself and Sergio Aguero was in full effect against Liverpool and the fact that they were laying goals on a plate for each other speaks volumes as to just how well they have managed to work together and when these two are in full flow then it is a pretty ominous sight for opposition defences.

City will have their tails up especially as the blue machine has crushed all before them in the past week, I don’t think it will be as easy a victory as the final day of last season but I think unfortunately for Hornets fans their unbeaten start to the season will finally come to an end this afternoon. Manchester City to win and then subsequently go top of the table.
