Watford vs Burnley – Match Preview

In a week where the funeral was held for former Watford manager Graham Taylor the club could have paid no greater respect after their stunning win over Arsenal at The Emirates. Watford enjoy success their last season when they dumped the then holders out of The F.A. Cup and they have now added a league upset to recent results.

After going 2-0 up early on Watford fans would have been in dreamland, had they scored too early and awoken the Arsenal beast. Well apparently not as The Gunners turned in one of if not their worst 45 minutes of the season to keep the score as it was going into the break.

Alex Iwobi may have halved the deficit soon after the restart but Arsenal failed to break down a resolute Watford as goals from Younes Kaboul and Troy Deeney meant that The Hornets have redecorated their first win in 7 league matches.

A win that was very welcome as far as Walter Mazzari is concerned. Pressure has been mounting on the former Inter Milan boss as the club has slid down the table due to a failure to win before Tuesday since December 10th. But the pressure will have been alleviated with victory in North London.

That does not mean they can afford to rest on their laurels as they need to continue to get points on the board to make sure they get ever nearer the hallowed target of 40 points, which more often than not means survival. Today they will look to do so when they play host to Burnley’s

It’s been well documented about Burnley’s incredibly home form this season but the away form is a different matter altogether. They have earned just 1 point on the road this season with that point coming away at Old Trafford, a game in which United could still be playing now and still not get the ball past Tom Heaton.

Burnley have managed to turn Turf Moor into Fort Knox and have scored an incredible 28 out of their 29 points in front of their own fans. The fact that they have won 9 games at home this season means that they have almost reached that 40 point marker themselves.

And had Sean Dyche’s men been better away from the home they may have already been there. It seems as if Burnley are going to stay up by simply winning their home games, a somewhat risky strategy but one that seems to be working at present.

That said it’s not as if Burnley would not like to earn some points away from home they have just struggled in which to do so. They nearly snatched a point at The Emirates themselves a fortnight ago only to once again see a contentious decision involving Laurent Koscielny go against them.

But they bounced back in perfect fashion with a win over champions Leicester on Tuesday. A win that sees Burnley not only move far clear of the drop zone but also into the top half of the table while The Foxes plunge deeper into a relegation battle.

As for Tonight can Burnley pick up a first away win of the season at Vicarage Road. Watford will be buoyed by their Arsenal victory on Tuesday and will no doubt have their tails up, that coupled with the fact that they are home may just give them the edge. A Watford win for me.
