Real Madrid wrestled back top spot in La Liga last night with a sensational comeback victory over Villarreal at El Madrigal. A first half was pretty fruitless with both sides failing to score but what was to come after the break was a sensational 45 minutes of action.
Villarreal raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Manu Trigueros fired a half volley past the reach of keeper Keylor Navas. Six minutes later, Real were rocked once more when Congolese forward Cedric Bakambu out-muscled Sergio Ramos to fire in low.
After defeat to Valencia earlier in the week, Los Blancos were in real danger of being handed back to back defeats which in turn would have blown the title race wide open. But even at 2-0 down Real’s heads did not drop as they looked to get back into the game.
They did so on 64 minutes when Gareth Bale halved the deficit, this gave Real hope and there would be even more than that just 10 minutes later when the visitors were awarded the perfect opportunity to draw level.
A contentiouis penalty was awarded when Bruno was adjudged to have handled in the box, the debate on whether it was intentional or not will roll on but it presented Cristiano Ronaldo with a chance to make it 2-2 from the spot. One that he did not refuse.
And there would be time for a final dramatic twist as super sub Alvaro Morata prodded home with 7 minutes left to play to sink the Yellow Submarine. A cruel blow for Fran Escriba’s men especially as they had Real on the ropes at one point. For what is the league’s meanest defence having only conceded 15 goals all season prior to last night that attribute escaped them when they really needed it.
The win sees Real sit 1 point clear of Barcelona with still that all important game in hand
