Valencia vs Atletico Madrid in less than 3 minutes

There’s a new name at the top of the La Liga table as Atletico Madrid have leapfrogged their cross city rivals Real. That was in no small part to their 2-0 win over Valencia at The Mestalla yesterday morning, a victory which now sees them top by virtue of goal difference.

Diego Simeone’s side are still unbeaten after their first 7 matches and yesterday had their French connection to thanks for giving them all three points. Antoine Griezmann broke the deadlock on 63 minutes and Kevin Gamiero made sure of the result in stoppage time but the 2-0 scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story.

Diego Alves heroics were unfortunately not fully rewarded as he saved two spot kicks but still came away from the game empty handed. Once again Griezmann missed from the spot and Gabi was also wasteful from 12 yards, thankfully their profligacy wasn’t punished and Griezmann made amends in the second half.

For Valencia it ends a run of back to back victories and they now find themselves back in the bottom three, it seems as if this side is still looking to gel after a whole host of summer signings. But you could say that this current set of performances are making Gary Neville’s time in Valencia look very impressive.

Here is all you need to know from yesterday’s game
