Unofficial Football World Championships – Argentina 1 Chile 0

The king is dead but long live the king as the UFWC crown goes from one familiar name to another. What with the title being in a state of South America landlock, bar the short reign of Mexico which even then only moved as far north as Latin America the title has been passed around like a proverbial hot potato. I’ve been covering it’s movements since 2011 when North Korea were the holders and since Argentina won the crown back in 2014 which was a third reign in as many years it has been kept far away from Europe.

Last week holders Chile – who themselves have been three time holders since 2014 went up against perennial winners Argentina and the outcome once again saw Argentina come out on top for what is now a 5th reign since beating Sweden back in 2013. They seem to have an iron grip on this crown and even if it does ease up they have a habit of winning it back soon afterwards.  Lionel Messi’s 1st half penalty was enough to wrestle the title from Chile and start another reign as UFWC champions.

Even with Alexis Sanchez declaring himself fit to play for holders Chile it was not enough as Argentina’s fearsome attack line of Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria supporting Gonzalo Higuain was to much for the travelling Chile side. It was always going to be a big ask for Chile and it seemed as if they task was just too great. Argentina must now defend their title as against Bolivia in La Paz on Tuesday. Could it be a very short reign or are we set to see another period of Argentina dominance?
