Unofficial Football World Championship – Uruguay 2 Ecuador 1

Thursday night saw UFWC action once again as holders Uruguay faced off against latest challengers Ecuador.
As per normal this doubled up as a World Cup Qualifier in what is a grueling 18 game campaign to reach Russia in 2018.

And once again holders Uruguay came out on top. After a hard earned draw in Colombia last month to keep their crown the test of Ecuador would have been slightly easier on paper especially at home but they were still made to work for the defence of their crown.

All three goals were scored in the first half. Sebastian Coates opened the scoring for Uruguay, before Felipe Caicedo equalised in the 44th minute. Within 60 seconds, however, Uruguay were ahead again through Diego Rolan.

So testament to Uruguay’s side that even when Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani don’t find the net there is an over reliance on these two fearsome forwards.

The result keeps Uruguay second in the WC qualification table, a point behind Brazil who beat Argentina 3-0 on Thursday night.

The next title match is as soon as Tuesday as Uruguay travel to recent holders Chile who will no doubt not only look to boost their own hopes of World Cup Qualification but also of regaining the UFWC Crown.

That win also sees Uruguay move clear into 10th in the all time rankings with 26. If they get that figure up to 29 then they could move as high as 7th by next year but they cannot look past the tough test that Chile will pose next week.
