Unofficial Football World Championship – Chile 3 Uruguay 1

We have a new holder of the UFWC crown as Chile got the better of Uruguay last night in South American World Cup Qualifying action. It’s Chile 3rd title reign since winning the Copa America last Summer under current Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli.

Uruguay’s short reign came to an end after they suffered a 3-1 reverse at the hands of Chile. The former holders started brightly when Edinson Cavani put the visitors in front after just 17 minutes and the hosts had it all to do if they were to dethrone Uruguay.

And Chile found a breakthrough just before half time when Eduardo Vargas headed an equaliser to restore parity and put the sides level going into half time. The second half would be all Chile though and Alexis Sanchez who defied the orders of Arsene Wenger played through a calf injury and from an international point of view it certainly paid off as he bagged a brace to put the home side 3-1.

A late flurry from Uruguay to try and get back into the game was fruitless as Chile managed to withhold any attacking attempts and with that they ensured that it would be them who would now be in possession of the coveted UFWC crown.

There is no international activity until March now but Chile probably couldn’t ask for a harder first defence as they travel to Argentina. If Argentina were to win that one then it would be their 5th reign in as many years. If Chile can hold onto the title until June 2017 then they will double up their Confederations Cup commitments with UFWC action and then there is every chance that it could finally move out of the South American landlock.
