Tottenham vs Manchester United a few quick thoughts

  • A whirlwind 6 minutes at White Hare Lane keeps Tottenham on the heels of Leicester and keeps them just about in the title race
  • With the game delayed until 4:30pm due to the Manchester United Coach (not Louis Van Gaal that is) stuck in traffic and the gap at the top of table temporarily at least extended to 10 points due to Leicester’s earlier win at Sunderland
  • It looked like it was going to be a frustrating late Afternoon for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they United manage to withstand Spurs attacking endeavour
  • The first 45 minutes, even an hour wasn’t a classic in all fairness and the tension in the ground was rising with every minute that Spurs failed to score
  • Even though Spurs couldn’t score they were hardly threatened by the traveling United  site with Anthony Martial’s jinking run not being matched by the same quality with his shot as it was comfortably saved by Hugo Lloris
  • It took to the 62nd Minute for that to happen and you could say that perhaps woke Spurs up as they looked for a winner
  • The game arguably turned when Timothy Fosu-Mensah came off injured in the 68th minute and was replaced by Matteo Darmian
  • Two minutes later Spurs got their just rewards with Dele Alli was in the right spot to slot home and put the home side infront
  • The tension then turned to elation 4 minutes with Toby Alderweireld heading home
  • Then like London Buses, Spurs waited ages for a goal and then three almost come at once as just a couple more minutes later Erik Lamela had put Spurs 3-0 up
  • An electric 6 minutes in which United capitulated and lost ground on Manchester City in the race for 4th
  • It was a miserable day for Louis Van Gaal’s side who now find them 4 points behind their cross city rivals
  • Once again the questions will be asked about Louis Van Gaal’s tactics, Ashley Young playing up front and Anthony Martial certainly rasied some eyebrows in what formed a very tepid attacking unit
  • And again the vultures will no doubt be circling around Louis Van Gaal as the work to seemingly keep his job at the end of the season gets harder with the prize of qualification slipping away
  • As for Spurs it was a great result and one that keeps the dream alive and right now that’s all they can do
  • Harry Kane and Dele Alli didn’t particularly have great games but with the Defence as solid as it was yesterday it only needed 1 goal to win the game as Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in their pockets
  • The gap goes back down to 7 points but next week Leicester will have chance to momentarily increase the gap to 10. If West Ham can do Spurs a favour and don’t forget they’ll be trying to get in the Top 4 then Spurs might just be able to eat into that gap the following night
  • Blind optimism for Spurs, possibly but they still hope for the title. Then again it’s the hope that kills you
