Tottenham vs Chelsea a few quick thoughts

  • The first win at Wembley in the Premier League will have to wait until at least Sunday as Tottenham were felled by Chelsea
  • Going into the game much was made of a depleted Chelsea who were missing key men due to a combination of injury and suspension
  • But once again it would be Antonio Conte who would out fox his Tottenham counterpart Mauricio Pochettino
  • In the four head to head meetings that they have had on English soil it is now 3-1 to Conte
  • Annoyingly the narrative of defeat will be the stadium Today would have been ideal to remove the Wembley millstone
  • A real opportunity missed to beat a weakened Chelsea Early in the season but a 6 point advantage would have laid down a marker
  • Marcos Alonso‘s opener was a fantastic effort, not a great deal you could do about that and Chelsea will have asked themselves how they were not in front after just 4 minutes when Alvaro Morata headed wide when unmarked
  • Defeat has nothing to do with stadium though You cannot legislate for bad goalkeeping like that
  • Lose 1-0 fair enough
  • Lose 2-1 and concede when the momentum is fully ours I guess it is the hope that kills you
  • Hugo Lloris knew he had dropped a clanger after Alonso had scored this second of the afternoon
  • It was such a poor goal to concede in a number of areas, Tottenham failed to stop N’Golo Kante’s surging run and even though that move eventually broke down, David Luiz was instrumental in keeping the ball alive in the second phase of play
  • By the time he had pick pocketed Victor Wanyama, Alonso was already surging down the left flank and his finish would silence a Wembley stadium which was just picking up in terms of atmosphere
  • When Michy Batshuayi put through his own net with just 8 minutes to go, you felt that Tottenham were to go on and get the winner but unfortunately Chelsea did not read the script
  • It was a frustrating afternoon for Harry Kane who saw another effort come back off the post
  • Just like last week he failed to score and that means there are still no goals for the England international in August
  • Not only that though but he is still stuck on 99 goals for the club
  • Tiemoue Bakayoko looked somewhat erratic for Chelsea, but given time he will bed in and become a useful addition to Chelsea
  • There’s something about playing Hueng min-Son at left wing back and losing to Chelsea
  • I know it was only for a few minutes this time around but it seems that tactical idea is cursed
  • Then again with such few options at full back/wing back, what else could Mauricio Pochettino do but roll the dice
  • Whether the result would have been different with Danny Rose at left back remains to be seen
  • Whether Chelsea test the waters with a bid for the England international remains to be seen also
  • It may have only been the second week of the season but it was a big win for Chelsea
  • A result that shows that the rot has not set in with the champions and last week was just a sheer fluke
  • They were caught out by Burnley and Tottenham will have to hope that the same does not happen this coming Sunday
  • Chelsea face Everton and will have put that opening weekend defeat well behind them
  • It was not the stadium that lost the game for Tottenham yesterday, hopefully this weekend they can prove that point
  • Beat Burnley and it shows that it was just a defeat to a title rival nothing more, nothing less
  • But Tottenham will be no doubt be ruing the opportunity to already open up a 6 point gap on last season’s champions
  • How pivotal will Marcos Alonso’s goal prove to be come the end of the season?
