Tottenham vs Bayer Leverkusen a few quick thoughts

- I had the fortune or is that the misfortune to be at Wembley last night
- That means these few quick thoughts will be different as I haven’t had the luxury of watching the game from the comfort of my front room
- It’s fair to say the Wembley experience isn’t treating us too well
- That’s not just in this season’s Champions League
- We have now lost are last six at this ground
- If the housewarming party against Monaco didn’t go to plan then showing the parents around the new gaff wasn’t a success either
- It’s as if the parents have had a look and said ‘it’s no good son, we want you to return home
- Whether you blame the move to Wembley as the reason for Tottenham’s defeat last night is up to you but even if that wasn’t the main factor the atmosphere there is so sterile
- I cannot fathom why you can’t have a drink at UEFA matches, it just makes the atmosphere so dull
- People may argue that why catchy to without a beer for two hours but I would counter that with the fact that if I’m paying X amount of pounds for a ticket then surely be half-time pint isn’t out of the question
- When Tottenham announced they were playing at Wembley it sounded exciting as the queues for buying tickets showed the demand for these matches
- But right now the thought of doing it all again next month for CSKA Moscow doesn’t sound all that appealing
- Right enough of the stadium based rants,let’s focus on the football
- Were there any positives to take from that?
- Christian Eriksen was once again anonymous, this has been the case all too much since he was given that new contract
- Mousa Dembele is now set to miss out on the North London Derby, it never rains but it pours
- The defence was a shambles last night, if we defend like that in Sunday then Arsenal will have a field day
- It’s amazing the difference between Danny Rose playing and not
- Ben Davies just doesn’t offer that same attacking endeavour
- We were so lop sided last night, with Kyle Walker surging from the right this at times were are only attacking forays
- Once again Vincent Janssen worked hard but no one has the anticipation or foresight to run on past him.
- I don’t often say this but I thought we missed Erik Lamela last night
- Just needed a bit of guile and even a bit of nastiness in that under performing midfield
- The goal was not out of the blue but it did come when Spurs had just started to step it up a notch, that said Javier Hernandez should have had already put Leverkusen up at that point
- We were really sloppy last night and once again Lloris’ distribution was poor
- With 10 minutes to go from the opposite end many thought that Eric Dier had levelled matters with that free kick but it wasn’t to be
- We seem to be good at hitting the crossbar if nothing else
- I honestly couldn’t tell you if Dele Alli should have had a penalty or not as I was at the wrong end of the ground
- I hate leaving matches early but at 83 minutes, enough was enough
- After taking an age to get back after the Monacco game I cut my losses
- Turned out for the best as I was home an hour earlier, just add to how annoying the Wembley experience is
- Then again if you win it doesn’t matter what time you roll in
- It’s the joy of six, or lack of it
- No win in 6 in all competitions and no win in 6 at Wembley
- Surely it has to be lucky number 7?
- And what a time to end the run…..Sunday
- Although on that performance I think that Arsenal at Evens could be like buying money
- But enough of the pessimism, let’s focus on Sunday
- In a sense last night was probably the bigger game
- Lose to Arsenaal and there is still 27 matches to make up just 6 points but defeat last night has given us a lot to do if we are not to return to Europa League purgatory
- That’s enough from me, let’s see what Sunday now brings
