Swansea vs Liverpool a few quick thoughts

  • Oh to be a Liverpool fan
  • Riding high after beating Manchester City the weekend before last only to then be bought back down to Earth with a mighty bump last night
  • Swansea had the task of playing host to a Liverpool side who would undoubtedly have had their tails up after putting an end to the unbeaten streak of Manchester City’s men
  • But results like last night are arguably the reason as to why Liverpool will never go on to win the Premier League
  • Beat the side at the top, lose to the side at the bottom
  • That inconsistency will be and ultimately has been their undoing
  • Not only that but they passed up the perfect opportunity to go five points clear of Tottenham in the race for fourth place
  • If Tottenham spurned their opportunity on Sunday then Liverpool blew theirs on Monday
  • Alfie Mawson was the hero in terms of goals as his goal before the break put Swansea ahead
  • But credit has to go to him and his teammates for a simply heroic performance throughout
  • If that was one defender making the headlines, then other did not have a Premier League debut befitting that of a £75m transfer fee
  • Virgil van Dijk looked assured for the majority of the game but fingers will undoubtedly be pointed at the fact that he failed to effectively cut out two successive crosses, heading both out for corners, and his timid header then struck Swansea skipper Fernandez and fell perfectly for Mawson, who finished like a striker into the bottom corner.
  • Carlos Carvalhal has now overseen his Swansea team take seven points from a possible twelve since his arrival
  • Their only defeat came at the hands of Tottenham at the end of 2017 and even then they were unlucky not to get something out of the game
  • Luck was certainly on their side though especially in the final few minutes of the game
  • Roberto Firmino hitting the post and Adam Lallana failing to score from two yards
  • Mohamed Salah and Emre Can blazing over as the Liverpool players laid siege behind the goal
  • Swansea had 11 men behind the ball and were admittedly hanging for dear life at the very end but hang on they did
  • For them it is a win that still sees them at the bottom of the table but they will at least take comfort by the fact that they are not cast adrift
  • Not only that but there are now just six points separating them and Watford in 10th
  • Absolutely no-one is safe in the battle to beat the drop
  • Both teams now will be preparing for F.A. Cup exploits this coming weekend
