- Arsenal see themselves through to the Quarter Finals of the F.A. Cup after finally breaking Sutton United hearts last night
- With ther draw that Arsenal have been given you would almost say that they have made it through to the Semi Finals
- Perhaps that is doing Lincoln a small disservice but can we really see a Non-League team booking a trip to a Wembley semi?
- Who knows but that is for next month
- Lets return our attention to last night
- It was a game that the BBC were desperate for Sutton to win
- The romantic story wrote itself but as we know it was not to be
- Arsene Wenger made 7 changes from the mauling in Munich
- Alexis Sanchez dropped to the bench, while Mesut Ozil was given the night off
- And in fairness Arsenal’s fringe players did not really kick the first eam door down
- It was a professional performance
- But I guess Arsenal were damned if they do and damed if they didn’t
- A win and it was they were expected to get
- Defeat and it would have been a disaster for Arsene Wenger
- Thankfully for Wenger though, crisis was averted when Lucas Perez put The Gunners ahead before the break
- After neat work on the right, the former Deportivo forward cut in and fired a low ball into the box
- The run of Theo Walcott perhaps causing the Sutton goalkeeper to momentarily lose focus
- But that was enough for the ball to nestle in at the far post to put Arsenal ahead
- Sutton to their credit were holding their own
- Heads would have dropped after going behind but that did not mean they lost any passion
- Some of their tackles in the opening half were robust to say the least
- But importantly they were just a goal down and still in the tie
- The objective would have been to keep the score at 1-0 and aim for a late charge
- Unfortunately that plan would have to be shelved when Theo Walcott was on hand to tap home The Gunners second and also his 100th goal for the club
- That was all but game over
- But even then, Sutton’s heads did not drop
- Roarie Deacon hammered the crossbar from 25 yards as Sutton looked to at least give their side something to shout about
- That unfortunately did not happen as Arsenal kept a clean sheet, rhat said there was some last ditch defending at times
- For Arsenal and Arsene Wenger they will be glad to come out of this unscathed
- The focus now shifts to finding some momentum in the Premier League once again
- While for Sutton the job of staying in the National League starts
- But if they can do and with the windfalls they have received along thevway they should be a lot stronger next season
