Sunderland vs Liverpool – Match Preview

Sunderland defender John O’Shea is struggling with a calf problem and could be replaced by Wes Brown, who has only made one appearance this season.

Younes Kaboul remains sidelined by a hamstring injury that will keep him out for a number of weeks.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he won’t play Daniel Sturridge until he is sure the striker is fit.

Divick Origi is doubtful through injury and James Milner is still out, but Jordan Ibe has recovered from illness.

Editor’s Note: Sunderland are in danger of being cast adrift in the drop zone as the sides around them such as Bournemouth, Newcastle, Swansea and Norwich are all picking up points where they are failing to. It’s now 4 defeats in a row for The Black Cats as they play host to Liverpool on Wednesday.

They were comfortably beaten 4-1 on Saturday by Manchester City with the only real positive being a Fabio Borini consolation goal in what was a torrid afternoon for Sam Allardyce and his Sunderland men. They currently find themselves 7 points from safety and find themselves up against a Liverpool side who are fresh off of beating Leicester last time out.

Sam Allardyce has gone on record and stated that he is looking to bring some new faces in the January transfer window in a bid to secure survival but in the meantime he has to make sure the gap to safety doesn’t get any bigger. I suppose the good news is that it can’t get any bigger tonight but if they taste defeat on Wednesday then a 7 point handicap is going to be quite the challenge for Big Sam.

The challenge for Jurgen Klopp is to get Liverpool in the European places his side currently sit in 10th position but a win Tomorrow could see them go 7th and joint on points with rivals Manchester United. There was a marked improvement on Saturday as victory over Leicester saw them record their first league win in 4 matches. A win that could have more comfortable had Christian Benteke not spurned a near open goal in injury time.

With the injury to Divick Origi, Benteke looks set to start against Sunderland as Liverpool look to heap more misery on Sunderland. Their last two away trips have seen defeats so Jurgen Klopp will be hoping it isn’t 3 in a row but if Liverpool can play more like they did against Leicester and less like their Watford outing then I see no reason why The Reds can’t leave with all 3 points and move to 7th. An away win for me
