Southampton vs Watford – Premier League Match Preview

Southampton play host to Watford this afternoon and their is the impressive stat that neither man in charge of their respective clubs has lost in the Premier League since taking charge. That record could come to and end for one those bosses come 5pm though.

Both the Saints and the Hornets have five points from their opening three matches. Southampton have been functional as they have played out two bore draws and a five goal thriller which saw them beat West Ham late on in the second weekend of the season.

While Watford have already been a vast improvement already under former Hull boss Marco Silva. They played out a six goal thriller on the opening weekend against Liverpool which ended up seeing the points being shared while a win over Bournemouth followed a week later.

In their previous run out before the international break they had to make do with a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton. On the face of it that perhaps does not look like a good point after their opening two displays but the fact that Miguel Britos was sent off for an x-rated tackle early on means that it was probably a well earned point in the end.

Southampton had to make do with same scoreline when they traveled to Huddersfield, a point on the road is not something that you should usually look down at but the apparent lack of goals will be of some concern to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

It seems as if the 3-2 win over West Ham was more the exception than the rule, as the other two games have seen them fail to breach the opposition. They are creating chances but they are lacking the killer instinct to finish off teams when they are the on the ropes.

Although they may be goal shy the fact that only Javier Hernandez has managed to get the better of Fraser Forster this season will be a huge plus point for Southampton and even more so with the fact that Virgil van Dijk is still at the club after a protracted summer transfer saga.

It looks like all is calm in the Southampton camp for now as player and manager have kissed and made up with the Dutch international returning to training this week. A return this afternoon will come around too soon but this will undoubtedly be a huge bonus for the club going forward.

Both teams have started the season relatively well, you could argue that Watford’s start has been better because they are coming from a lower base in terms of their record last season especially towards the end of the campaign but ultimately both clubs are on five points from nine and there can be few complaints with that.

If either side can come out on top this afternoon then the complexion of this early season period will look even better, that said I think both teams will probably cancel each other out and therefore add another point to their burgeoning tallies. A draw for me.
