Sacre Bleu for France as Raphael Varane out for Euro 2016

French Centre Back Raphael Varane will miss next month’s European Championship after sustaining a thigh injury yesterday while training for Real Madrid in their preparations for Saturday’s Champions League Final against cross city rivals Atletico. It’s a personal double blow for Varane as he will also miss Saturday’s encounter after scans showed that he will be ruled out for the next 3 weeks.

With Manager Didier Deschamps not willing to take half fit Varane as a passenger for the first few weeks of Euro 2016 he has instead called up Europa League Winner Adil Rami as his replacement. The injury to Varane will only add to Deschamps’ frustration as he is already missing Kurt Zouma after he was ruled out of the tournament back in February after suffering a cruciate ligament injury which will see him out until September

Deschamps will be hoping that there aren’t any more defensive casaulties between now and the start of the tournament on June 10th when they play hosts to Romania at the Stade De France

From Varane’s point of view could that mean that is the last Football he has played for Real Madrid. With Jose Mourinho set to be the heir apparent at Manchester United he has been linked with taking Varane to Old Trafford this Summer and linking up again after their time at The Bernabeu. It was Mourinho who bought him there back in 2011 and he will no doubt relish the chance to link up with him again. I guess we’ll have to watch this space
