  • Russia XI (3-4-2-1): Akinfeev; Vasin, Dzhikiya, Kudryashov; Samedov, Erokhin, Glushakov, Zhirkov; Golovin, Bukharov; Smolov.
  • Russia substitutes: Smolnikov, Shishkin, Gazinskiy, Poloz, Kambolov, Gabulov, Kutepov, Miranchuk, Marinato, Kanunnikov, Tarasov, Kombarov.
Mexico XI (4-3-3): Ochoa; Araujo, Diego Reyes, Moreno, Layun; Jonathan dos Santos, Herrera, Guardado; Vela, Hernandez, Lozano.
Mexico substitutes: Cota, Marquez, Fabian, Jimenez, Giovani dos Santos, Talavera, Damm, Peralta, Aquino, Luis Reyes, Alanis
  • This will be the first time the two sides have met one another since 1994, when Russia comfortably won 4-1 in a friendly in the build-up to that summer’s World Cup. The only other meeting was another victory for Russia in their first ever outing after the breakup of the Soviet Union, with the new team impressing in a 2-0 win in Moscow in August 1992.
  • Mexico had to head into half-time a goal down when they met New Zealand in their last outing, but they showed good grit and determination to fight back and win 2-1. Raul Jimenez and Oribe Peralta got themselves on the scoresheet as they helped their side to a much-needed victory, and it leaves them needing just one more point to reach the semi-finals.
  • It’s now or never for Russia, who will be well aware that anything less than a victory here today will surely see them drop out of the competition. The host nation impressed in a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory against New Zealand before a passive display against Portugal saw them narrowly lose, leaving them with one last chance to book their place in the final four.
