Ronaldo heaps the pressure on Mourinho during Old Trafford return

The perfect scenario for Manchester United fans regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s return would have been a United win accompanied by flashes of brilliance from one of their favourite former sons. Alas, it wasn’t to be – the win that is – but there were moments of magic from Ronaldo. One, in particular, ended in an assist as Paulo Dybala finished smartly with his left foot.

Juventus would beat United at a canter in the end, which would have spelt more worry and concern for the powers that be at Manchester United. Jose Mourinho has had a lot to contend with over the last few weeks and with the run of fixtures his side have had to endure, it’s amazing he has still managed to hang on to his job at Old Trafford.

United may have to take second spot in the odds

Losing to Juventus was never going to spell the end for Mourinho as it was a game that could have gone either way and, when you’re looking at United’s form in the Champions League objectively, they still look well placed to advance alongside the Italian giants.

A Valencia draw away to Young Boys would have gone some way in easing the pain that a loss to Juventus caused.

As it stands, there’s almost no doubt that Juventus will now win Group H. The Old Lady are backed at 1/50 to top the group and, all of a sudden, United look like they will have to settle for second. Their odds of 10/1 seem to indicate last night’s loss put paid to any chances of an easier draw in the round of 16.

Red Devils still favourites ahead of Valencia

There shouldn’t be any real worry for the United faithful, though, as Valencia are at odds of 40/1 to win Group H and 11/5 to go through with Juventus. That won’t have made the loss any easier to take, though, for a United crowd that are, if we’re being perfectly honest, having their patience tested on a regular basis. However, to give the majority their due, they are sticking by Mourinho. This is despite the case that Manchester City are firing on all cylinders again and pulling away from their arch-rivals.

Any hope of winning the league is almost gone with Manchester United now at odds of 100/1, Punters who think Mourinho can still inspire his charges to a miraculous Premier League victory can claim a £100 free bet bonus to be used on the Betfair betting site. Stranger things have happened and you can be completely sure that there is no doubt in Jose Mourinho’s mind that his side can still top the league come next May.

The Portuguese manager has been giving what is now his trademark three finger salute to anyone doubting his ability to still cut it in English football. The pressure must be unbearable and something will have to give sooner or later but, for now, Mourinho lives to see another day. A slip up at home to Young Boys, on the other hand, could well be the last straw and a win at Juventus could see him keep his job for the season.
