There’s a new name at the top of La Liga as Real Madrid have once again reached the summit thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Athletic Bilbao combined with the misfortune of their cross city rivals Atletico.
With Atletico losing earlier in the afternoon it meant that a win for Real would see them return the top and that is exactly what they did last night although they left it late against a spirited Athletic side.
The start was promising for Real as Karim Benzema put Los Blancos ahead after just 7 minutes but then Sabin Merino silenced The Bernabeu when he equalised just 20 minutes later.
Ballon D’or Nominee Cristiano Ronaldo had an off night as he missed a whole host of chances but Alvaro Morata was on hand to get him off the hook as he scored the late winner for Real. A double celebration for Morata as it was his birthday yesterday.
