Premier League Week 30 A Few Quick Thoughts

  • Whisper it quietly but we might just have a title race on our hands
  • The gap at the top has been cut from 10 points to 7 and all of a sudden things are a little more interesting at the top of the Premier League table
  • Chelsea’s defeat to Crystal Palace was very much a coupon buster and Tottenham managed to take full advantage of the fact
  • On any other day Chelsea would have won the game but Diego Costa was in somewhat of a wasteful mood and Palace were good value for what is a fourth straight win
  • Tottenham did what so many failed to do and that was go to Turf Moor and win
  • They may have picked up some injuries with Harry Winks and Vincent Janssen set to miss out in midweek after what was a war of attrition at times but with Chelsea facing Manchester City on Wednesday and Tottenham travelling to Swansea, we could see the title race blown wide open
  • Manchester City will look to go one better than the draw at The Emirates yesterday
  • After going ahead through Leroy Sane on just 5 minutes many felt that it was going to be a very long afternoon for Arsenal but credit must go to them for at least earning a point
  • It buys Arsene Wenger a bit of time as the toxic atmosphere continues at The Emirates but had his players perhaps offered a bit more after the break they could have gone and won the game
  • Liverpool got the better of the Merseyside Derby and solidified their hopes of a Champions League spot come the end of the season while Everton missed their chance of moving up to 6th and strengthening their own European bid
  • It was quite a feisty affair but life without Lallana did not seem to an issue for Liverpool although they are without Sadio Mane in midweek and the pair of them being absent could be one absence too many
  • Manchester United will once again rue the fact that they have stuttered to another home draw
  • This time it was West Brom who frustrated Jose Mourinho’s men and came away from Old Trafford with a share of the points
  • For United if results do not go their way in the next week then the obvious route would then be to focus on the Europa League and win that outright
  • If that is the case then it’s good news for the likes of Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool
  • It was also good news for Hull as they got a huge win over West Ham
  • They are not out of the drop zone but are now just a point from safety and it looks like that final berth could be fought between themselves and Swansea
  • Paul Clement’s side played Middlesbrough yesterday in a game that will not be remembered for any positives anytime soon
  • A result that does neither side any real favourites and Swansea will look at that as an opportunity spurned
  • Sunderland must now surely be consigned to the drop, they need to double their points tally between now and the end of the season
  • Quite simply that is not going to happen
  • Watford’s win over the Premier League’s basement side pushes them a game closer to survival
  • And the same can be said for Leicester as the incredible run of results under Craig Shakespeare continues
  • It’s now 4 straight wins since he took over and it is looking like the right decision to remove Ranieri
  • Mark Hughes’s men were well beaten on Saturday as they are consigned to more mid table malaise
  • While Southampton and Bournemouth’s South Coast derby failed to live up to what few expectation there may have been
