Newcastle vs Manchester City a few quick thoughts

  • Was it two points dropped for Manchester City in the race for third or a vital point for Newcastle in terms of trying to beat the drop
  • To be honest it was probably both
  • The all important game in hand for both sides didn’t warrant the right result for either side
  • City went ahead through Sergio Aguero’s 100th Premier League goal although it wasn’t without it’s controversy
  • Aguero was clearly Offside from Alexsandar Kolarov’s Free Kick but the goal was allowed to stand
  • An error by the officials and it seems as if when you’re at the bottom of the table the decisions always seem to go against you
  • But Newcastle didn’t dwell on the decision for too long and after half an hour Vernon Anita had restored parity with a well placed curling effort
  • City then had opportunities to go ahead but Karl Darlow was impressive and made key saves from both Kevin De Bruyne and Jesus Navas
  • But it was Newcastle who left it late to try and find a winner and if it wasn’t for Joe Hart could have snatched all 3 points and a vital win which would have seen them move out of the drop zone
  • His save from Georginio Wijnaldum’s effort means Newcastle stay 2 points from safety with just 4 games to go
  • But it seems as if Rafa Benitez is finally starting to work his magic at St James Park, that’s now 4 points from the last two matches but the question is do they have enough time to get themselves out of the bottom three
  • Next up they go to Liverpool in what will be a homecoming of sorts for Rafa Benitez, if they can get three points at Anfield then it will be a very happy return for the man who masterminded their 2005 Champions League success
  • As for City, they could find themselves back down to 4th on Thursday if Arsenal beat West Brom at home and if their cross city rivals United can beat Crystal Palace at home Tonight they will cut the gap to just two points. It’s all hotting up in the race for the Champions League spots. We’ll have a greater idea of the landscape after Thursday night.
