Newcastle vs Bournemouth – Premier League Match Preview

Newcastle missed out on the chance to move into the top six of the Premier League on Monday night after they were beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor. Truth be told it was by no means a classic but even their defeat should not diminish their efforts from the first few months of the season.

As things stand Rafa Benitez’s men find themselves ninth in the Premier League table and they know that a win today could well take them into the top six if only for a few hours what with Liverpool playing at West Ham later in the evening.

It may well be dependant on a combination of results but this afternoon they play host to a Bournemouth side that is looking for some much needed points, ones that could see them move out of the bottom three by the end of the evening and hopefully for them the weekend.

There’s two things that Eddie Howe will not want after the end of this game, firstly to be in the bottom three at the international break and secondly the last thing he will want is to see his team begin to cast adrift if the other teams around him manage to pick up points this weekend.

Newcastle’s defeat to Burnley on Monday was certainly not one for the purest and you got the feeling going into the game that there was not going to be many if any goals that night, the Magpies may have lost four times this season but they don’t lose by all that much with three of those defeats coming by just a solitary goal.

They don’t give away all that much at the back but one criticism could be the fact that they do not offer too much at the other end of the pitch, they have scored 10 goals in as many matches but I guess if your defence is solid then it is something you can get away with as their league placing would attest to.

For Bournemouth though it is a different story, not enough goals at one end and too many conceded at the other end of the field. Just six goals have been scored in the Premier League this season with 14 goals against, so it is fair to say that both attacking and defensive departments are below par.

Last weekend they played host to Chelsea at the Vitality Stadium and although they lost to a solitary Eden Hazard goal the scoreline flattered the home side especially as Alvaro Morata spurned a first half chance and then Chelsea had a goal ruled out incorrectly for offside.

There was a late flurry for Bournemouth as at 1-0 there is always a chance of something but it is fair to say that Chelsea were on top for much of the game and should have put the game to bed much earlier, thankfully for Antonio Conte’s men they were not punished for their profligacy.

Unfortunately for Bournemouth though it was another game in which they failed to register points and it is just four points from the last fifteen available, there have been fleeting signs of solid performances but the club cannot seem to get any traction and gain the momentum required to get them up the table.

As for today, Newcastle fans will probably be delighted there team is playing on a Saturday for a change. I think they’ve forgotten what they feel like but also I think there will be celebrating even further come 5pm as they earn all three points against Bournemouth.

Here is what social media thinks will happen – you can still vote on the outcome
