New Zealand Confederations Cup Squad

Oceania’s representatives for this months FIFA Confederations Cup comes in the form of New Zealand and Anthony Hudson has formally named his 23 man squad for the competition.

After not reaching the 2013 edition due to Tahiti representing Oceania this will be a welcome return for the All Whites to the main international stage as they look to also return to the FIFA World Cup after missing out on 2014 qualification.

That would have been a bitter pill to swallow after a respectable showing in the 2010 edition, the Kiwi’s where the only side to go through the tournament unbeaten with three draws in the group stage and one of those was a draw against European giants Italy.

Shane Smeltz got the opener for New Zealand and he is one four forwards to have been named in the squad with the main name of that quartet unsurprisingly being the captain Chris Wood of English Championship outfit Leeds United.

Leeds had to deal with the bitter blow of missing out on the play-offs at the end of the season so Wood will at least look to take some of that disappointment out on opposition defences over the course of the summer.

Before their tilt at the Confederations cup kicks off they have a tune up fixture against Belarus which will provide a warm up for the group stage, from which they will face hosts Russia, Central America’s representative Mexico and the might of the European Champions Portugal.

Here is the All Whites squad in full

Goalkeepers: Stefan Marinovic, Tamati Williams, Glen Moss
Defenders: Andrew Durante, Thomas Doyle, Storm Roux, Michael Boxall, Kip Colvey, Themi Tzimopoulos, Deklan Wynne, Sam Brotherton, Tommy Smith, Dane Ingham
Midfielders: Bill Tuiloma, Clayton Lewis, Michael McGlinchey, Ryan Thomas, Marco Rojas, Alex Rufer
Forwards: Chris Wood (c), Monty Patterson, Shane Smeltz, Kosta Barbarouses
