Midweek Football a few quick thoughts

  • 4 games were played over the past couple of nights and they have had a bearing on both ends of the table with a round of fixtures still to play
  • Let’s focus on the bottom three and there will no doubt become sore heads in Sunderland Today as they will have no doubt been celebrating Premier League survival last night
  • Then again you could say that there will probably be some sore heads in both Newcastle and Norwich as they will have no doubt been some drowning of sorrows now that relegation has been confirmed
  • For all the tension going into last night’s game, Sunderland ended up strolling past another weak Everton offering. Could three miserable defeats on the road be the run that consigns Roberto Martinez to the sack
  • Sam Allardyce has revived the clubs fortunes and Sunderland’s form has been solid if nothing else as of late
  • But it’s that form that has been the difference in terms of survival
  • Allardyce came in with enough time to turn things around and more importantly had a transfer window to bring in reinforcements
  • What Rafa Benitez would have done with one of those you wonder
  • It seems as Benitez just didn’t have enough time to turn things around
  • The question now is whether or not Benitez stays on Tyneside for next season
  • Norwich were gallant last night but it was too little too late for Alex Neil’s side
  • Defensive errors have been their undoing in a season where truth be told they never looked comfortable
  • The most telling result would have been the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland last month
  • If one game can show the changing trajectories of two clubs then that must be it
  • I don’t think Alex Neil is any immediate danger as to losing his job but life in The Championship will have to start well next season or there could be cause for concern
  • As for Watford it’s another defeat and you have to wonder how safe Quique Sanchez Flores’ job is at Vicarage Road
  • With talks taking place at the end of the season, you need to be making sure that your side is finishing strongly but right now his side are doing the opposite
  • A nervy Summer awaits for the Ex Atletico Manager
  • On Tuesday much was made of the Manchester United coach getting bottled, it’s then quite ironic that United went on to bottle their chance of getting into the Top 4
  • Although a delayed kick off, West Ham did get their perfect send off thanks to Winston Reid’s late header
  • Looking at the table now, how much will Slaven Bilic be ruing that defeat to Swansea last Weekend.
  • A win last Saturday would have now seen them level with a stuttering Manchester City.
  • Now they will have to make sure they secure a Top 6 finish with both Southampton and Liverpool primed to snatch 6th place
  • For United it was in their own hands but now they need to beat Bournemouth and hope City lose to an in form Swansea
  • Europa League Thursday’s await Old Trafford but will they await Louis Van Gaal
  • Liverpool snatched a share of the points at home to Chelsea thanks to Christian Benteke’s late header
  • They could still finish as high as 6th but with the Europa League Final right around the corner you get the feeling it’s going to be Champions League Qualification or bust for Jurgen Klopp
  • As for Chelsea, they probably wish that Eden Hazard’s season didn’t start in May. Another fantastic strike last night asvhe danced through Liverpool’s backline to stroke the ball home. A fantastic finish but just a glimpse of the kind of things he should have been doing this season
