Match Of The Day a few quick thoughts

  • Match Of The Day saw Manchester City vs Liverpool first up and it made the most headlines yesterday, you can read my take on it by clicking the linked text
  • 6 other games took place yesterday and Manchester United lost their one hundred percent record at Stoke
  • Another of Stoke’s recent signings would have endeared himself to the club’s fans as Maxim Choupo-Moting scored a brace of goals
  • The first put the home side ahead before the break while the second restored parity after Romelu Lukaku thought he had completed a Manchester United comeback
  • You could argue this was the first real test for Jose Mourinho’s men this season as they have made relatively light work of their first three matches
  • Choupo-Moting is the first person to breach Manchester United’s goal in this campaign as the Red Devils have to make do with sharing top spot with their cross town rivals City
  • Mark Hughes has a weird obsession with wanting a handshake doesn’t he
  • Tottenham made easy work of Everton as they ran out 3-0 winners at Goodison Park
  • Harry Kane of course had to get on the scoresheet as we enter September, his first had a huge slice of fortune but perhaps where that seemed to escape him in August he lucked in yesterday
  • Tottenham were simply dominant as Christian Eriksen made it two before the break and straight after Kane had his second of the game
  • In fairness 3-0 does not tell the tale as Everton were poor, Tottenham could have and arguably should have scored a similar amount to what Manchester City did yesterday
  • Everton has been dealt a bad hand by the computer fixture if they have any top six aspirations this is going to be something of a concern
  • A win was most welcome for Tottenham as they now are just three points off the top
  • Brighton found their first win in the Premier League after beating West Brom
  • Their home form is going to be influential in whether the Seagulls stay up or not and they will need more performances like yesterday as they made light work of Tony Pulis’ side
  • It was a first defeat of the season for West Brom and easily their worst performance of the four early season matches
  • Brighton will look to build on that result as they begin to pick up some momentum at this level
  • Chelsea make it three wins in a row and sit third in the league, not bad for a team that was in crisis on the first weekend of the season
  • Leicester gave it their all yesterday and again came away empty handed, like Everton the fixture computer has not been kind
  • But unlike Everton there performances have perhaps not warranted the points they deserve
  • Should that level of performance continue against lesser opposition then their situation should improve quickly
  • Alvaro Morata scored his third of the season and is already looking like an astute signing
  • His aerial threat was on display yesterday as he broke the deadlock
  • Chelsea rode out
  • Arsenal needed to win after their Anfield mauling and that is exactly what they got at the Emirates yesterday
  • They made light work of a Bournemouth side who have now lost all four of their Premier League matches
  • Something has to change soon for the Cherries as they looked relatively abject yesterday
  • They’ve only managed one goal this season and Jermaine Defoe is yet to get off the mark
  • For Arsenal, Alexander Lacazette started and bagged his second of the season but it was Danny Welbeck’s brace that earned the plaudits
  • At the end of the day it is just a win against Bournemouth, facing Chelsea next week will be the real acid test
  • Southampton looked ordinary against Watford as this was the third out of four games in which they drew a blank
  • They did not even register a shot until the 92nd minute, that department certainly has to improve as the weeks and months progress
  • For Watford though, Marco Silva is yet to be beaten since taking charge of The Hornets they sit in a very impressive fourth in the table
  • They looked much improved since last season, the key for them will be making sure the post Xmas slide does not kick in for the third game of a row
