Manchester United vs Tottenham – A few (very late) thoughts

spurs

Incredibly late and nothing you probably haven’t already read but I thought I would try and get some of my views across on how Tottenham performed on Saturday.

  • Losing to a solitary Own Goal was incredibly naff in a game that wasn’t particularly memorable but lunchtime kick offs rarely ever are
  • Surprising to see Kyle Walker start in the first place, I bet Spurs fans were collectively wishing that Kieran Trippier had started instead
  • Toby Alderweireld looked strong next to fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen in the centre of their defence, that is certainly the partnership we need to be looking at week in and week out with Wimmer and Fazio in supporting roles
  • Had Christian Eriksen managed to put away that 3rd minute lob it could have been a different story
  • Once we went behind though, for all our industry we never quite looked like getting in the game
  • Bentaleb had a bit of a mare and was rightly substituted early in the 2nd half
  • Lack of a Plan B off the bench to try and turn the game. Not having a sub striker on the bench says a lot. Whether Soldado or Adebayor actually leaves remains to be seen, but it doesn’t look like they will be featuring any time soon.
  • Which leads us onto the ongoing hunt for at least 1 support striker. Saido Berahino could be a bit more likely now that Rondon has moved to West Bromwich Albion, Javier Hernandez is another name that has cropped up time and time again and one that personally excites me, whether he would want to move from the bench of Manchester United to the bench of Tottenham remains to be seen though
  • The sooner Harry Kane opens his account for the season, the sooner everyone can stop saying “Second Season Syndrome”
  • Sergio Romero looked solid for Manchester United, so hopefully they will not have the need to enquire about Hugo Lloris. Hopefully Hugo is fit for his return on Saturday
  • Loved Eric Dier giving it out to Ashley Young, we don’t want a team full of thugs but it was good to see Dier not backing down. Like when Harry Kane squared up to Sergio Ramos in that Audi Cup match, it’s always pleasing to see your own players stand up for themselves. We could do with a bit more of that
  • A Home game against Stoke on Saturday which is never easy and then a trip to Leicester await us in the next two games, I think realistically we have to be looking at wins from both of these matches to get our season out of the blocks and get a bit of momentum going. 4 points from 6 wouldn’t be the end of the world, anything less than that and Pochettino could be feeling some pressure
