Manchester City vs Feyenoord – Champions League Match Preview

Manchester City may have booked their place in the Round of 16 after a win away at Napoli on Matchday 4 but they have not quite secured top spot in Group F. They require just a solitary point from their last two matches in the group stage and tonight they play host to Dutch champions Feyenoord.

The two teams met on Matchday 1 and it was a routine win for Pep Guardiola’s men as defender John Stones bagged a brace in what would end up being a 4-0 win in Rotterdam. The England international however does not feature tonight after injuring his hamstring, a setback that will see him miss the next 4-6 weeks.

Pep Guardiola has already gone on record and said he does not need replacing and to be fair to him he is probably right especially when they are scoring at will at the other end. Without being flippant it doesn’t really matter who is defence at the moment due to the amount of firepower they have at their disposal.

It was only the two goals that City managed to score at the weekend as they handed Claude Puel his first defeat since taking over the reigns at Leicester. Goals either side of the break from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne made sure that they would leave the King Power Stadium with all three points.

It is now 40 goals in their first 12 games of the season, that is just under 3.5 goals per game and the question that is being asked is whether or not they can go the whole Premier League campaign undefeated and become the new invincibles.

They may have another 26 league games to go but right now you would be hard pressed to find a team that is going to get in their way and the same could perhaps be said in the Champions League also. There is not one clear definitive favourite as yet but if you did have to choose a team then Manchester City are in with a shout.

You have to keep in mind that they are yet to be defeated in any competition this season, the closest anyone has come was Wolves in the Carabao Cup after they managed to take City all the way to penalties, but I think you have to offer the caveat that is also a competition which is bottom of their priorities.

That said they still edged through eventually and they will look to continue this unbeaten run against a Feyenoord side which finds itself bottom of the group and staring exit from European competition in the face as they have failed to get off the mark.

Something which seems an unlikely prospect this evening especially if City are in the mood to show just how devastating they can be. They come into this game not having had the best of preparations either as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to VVV Venlo at the weekend.

Their defence of the Dutch title has almost been non existent this season as they currently find themselves 7th in the table, already a staggering 14 points behind runaway leaders PSV but you get the feeling that their European exploits will bring little joy later this evening.

Truth be told I cannot see anything other than a Manchester City win over Feyenoord tonight, I think that is the default setting for all of their matches right now and there is no reason as to why this one will be any different. City to win and to also guarantee first place in the group in the process. Comfortable home win for me.
