It’s a homecoming of sorts for Rafa Benitez but the question is how much of a happy one will it be as he brings his Newcastle side to Anfield in search of a vital win to pull them out of the bottom 3.
They go up against a Liverpool side who seem to be firing on all cylinders as of late as they make a late charge for a Top 6 spot to go alongside possible Europa League success.
Last time out they hammered their cross city rivals Everton in the Merseyside Derby. It was one of the most one sided derbies in memory, it’s hard to measure how bad Everton were and how good were Liverpool. Maybe somewhere in the middle.
Newcastle will hope their opponents play like the blue half of Merseyside this Afternoon as they look to add to the points haul as of late. A win over Swansea and a well fought draw against Manchester City in the past week has certainly given Newcastle fresh hope in the bid to beat the drop but they are now going to have to go on the road and pick up not just points but wins.
A win today would see them go 17th for 24 hours at least. With Norwich not playing this weekend and Sunderland at home to Arsenal Tomorrow this could be a huge opportunity to lay down a marker.
That said it’s not going to be easy, the only saving grace could be of Jurgen Klopp decides to rest players what with the all important Europa League Semi Final on Thursday.
If that is the case than that will certainly give Newcastle a chance. I have a feeling Newcastle could get something out of this if Liverpool focus too much on Thursday. A sneaky point for Rafa’s return
