Liverpool vs Everton a few quick thoughts

  • So that is what £75m gets you then
  • The script writers were spot on last night as who else but Virgil van Dijk scored the winner in the Merseyside derby
  • Talk about a way to endear yourself to your new fans as the Dutch international headed home the goal that sees Liverpool progress to the 4th Round of the F.A. Cup
  • And with that it’s the red half of Merseyside that will have the local bragging rights for the next few months
  • Going into the game both Liverpool and Everton named stronger lineups than perhaps expected, especially after so much league football as of late
  • Liverpool gave a debut to their new January signing
  • While Everton’s signature of Cenk Tosun was just too late for inclusion
  • That meant that Wayne Rooney was once again tasked with leading the line for the Toffees but it was a derby game to forget for the former England captain
  • After picking up an early booking, he was then hauled off for Ademola Lookman in the second half and you would have to say that Everton looked more dangerous with the youngster on the pitch
  • However it would be the home side who drew first blood and it was another slightly contentious penalty award in a Merseyside derby
  • Last month Dejan Lovren put his hands on Dominic Calvert-Lewin with Craig Prowse pointing to the spot
  • While last night it was Bobby Madeley who felt that Everton defender Mason Holgate who was ajudged to have impeded Adam Lallana
  • The same end of the ground and the same end result
  • A goal, this time scored by James Milner and Jurgen Klopp would certainly have no complaints with this one
  • Moments later the game sparked into life as Holgate was once again involved, this time he pushed Roberto Firmino into the stands and that drew the ire of players and fans alike
  • Arguably it was the spark the game needed as it was a little sterile beforehand
  • Holgate stayed on the pitch and there is now going to be an investigation into the clash by the Football Association
  • Half time and Liverpool with their noses in front but Everton still well in the game
  • As mentioned though Everton certainly looked lively once Lookman replaced Rooney and he would play a part in Everton’s equaliser
  • Liverpool went off in search of a second but where hit by a lightning quick counter attack
  • Yannick Bolasie fed the ball to Lookman whose cross field pass found Phil Jagielka of all people in the Liverpool box
  • He calmly nudged the ball back to the on rushing Gylfi Sigurdsson who coolly slotted home past Loris Karius to level proceedings
  • With the games coming thick and fast, you got the feeling that the last thing either manager would have wanted was a replay
  • I guess both Jurgen Klopp and Sam Allardyce would get their wish but for differing reasons
  • That is because with just six minutes to go, a Liverpool corner was not dealt with and Jordan Pickford’s decision to come for the ball was punished by the debutant van Dijk and with the ball in the net the Kop had come alive once again
  • Everton rolled the dice in search of a second equaliser but came up short in the end
  • Liverpool go into the hat for the 4th Round and will seriously fancy their chances of winning the competition
  • While for Everton it is a case of just finishing as high as they can in what has been something of an underwhelming campaign.
